The Climate & Environmental Literacy Programme

Empowering Communities. Building Skills. Protecting Our Planet.

What is Adult Literacy for Life (ALL)?
Led by ECO-UNESCO in partnership with Kilkenny & Carlow ETB and Laois Offaly ETB, this national initiative helps build the knowledge and confidence to understand and act on climate and environmental issues. Through co-designed workshops, tutor training, and a practical resource pack, the programme makes climate and sustainability terminologies clear, relevant, and accessible to everyone.

Who is it for?
The programme is designed for literacy learners, particularly those from groups most affected by literacy challenges, including:

  • Members of the Traveller community
  • People who are long-term unemployed or from other marginalised groups
  • Migrants and international protection applicants
  • Carers and one-parent households
  • Low-paid workers

What will participants gain?

  • Clear understanding of climate change, biodiversity, sustainable development, and more in plain, everyday language
  • Practical skills to take action for the environment
  • Confidence to discuss climate issues with family, friends, and community
  • Resources for continued learning, including the potential for an online module through the ECO-Academy

For educators and tutors

The programme also delivers training for literacy tutors, enabling them to integrate climate and environmental topics into their own teaching to spread the impact further across Ireland.

How it works

  • Local focus groups to shape the content
  • Interactive, learner-centred workshops
  • Co-created resource pack and tutor guide

Why it matters
Climate change affects everyone, but not everyone has the same access to the language, tools, or opportunities to be part of the conversation. This programme removes barriers so that every voice can be heard in shaping a sustainable future.
