Environmental Youth Officer

 

LOCATION: 9 Burgh Quay, Dublin 2 – hybrid working options
SALARY: Depends on experience – starting salary range between €28,000-€30,000 (full-time rate – based on 35 hrs)
EMPLOYMENT: Fixed Term ending December 2023

Founded in 1986, ECO-UNESCO is Ireland’s environmental education and youth organisation, affiliated to the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Associations (WFUCA) and working to channel the passion, creativity, and energy of young people into positive environmental action. Through our range of programmes and services we inspire, educate, empower, and support young people to act.

The Role

ECO-UNESCO seeks to employ an Environmental Youth Officer. This is a position of responsibility within ECOUNESCO, playing a key role in the delivery of ECO-UNESCO’s Youth Climate Justice programme and supporting other initiatives such as camps and workshops. The role includes partner engagement, workshop delivery, event planning & management, monitoring & evaluation and funder reporting.

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Developing, delivering, and reporting on a Youth Climate Justice project.
  • Rolling out the Youth Climate Justice Advocate programme and supporting participant groups in their
    development of Climate Justice focused Action Projects.
  • Developing strong relationships with partner organisations to ensure their ongoing engagement and
    contribution to the project.
  • Delivering climate justice education, training & awareness workshops to young people.
  • Promoting the Youth Climate Justice project to participants and key stakeholders.
  • Supporting work on ECO-UNESCO’s annual Youth Climate Justice Survey.
  • Continue to grow awareness of climate justice, engaging new supporters with a view to strengthening the
    case for ongoing project funding.
  • Supporting ECO-UNESCO’s programmes including workshops and camps.
  • Assisting with project reporting to a Government funder and application process.

 

Other responsibilities:

  • Carrying out monitoring & evaluation on all project activities.
  • Writing/completing reports on a regular basis.
  • Undertaking any other such relevant duties as directed.
  • Assisting in any other areas of ECO-UNESCO work.
  • Representing ECO-UNESCO on relevant ESD and DE bodies.

Candidate Requirements

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 3rd Level Qualification in a related field (geography, environmental studies, climate etc.) (Essential)
  • An education or youth work qualification (Desirable)
 

Experience:

  • At least 2 years work experience in direct work with young people (10-18); youth work, education, and/or
    environmental education in a similar youth scheme/programme (Essential)
  • An understanding of climate justice and environmental issues (Essential) 
  • Experience in developing and delivering youth, education and training programmes (Essential)
  • Demonstrable organisation skills, having managed multiple priorities and adherence to deadlines (Essential)
  • A strong interest in the environment, international development and working with young people (Essential)
  • Budgetary management experience; from initial planning through to end of project reporting (Desirable) 
  • A full, clean driving license (Desirable) 

 

Knowledge and skills:

  • Solid Knowledge of the youth work sector and education system in Ireland (Essential)
  • Knowledge of Climate Justice in a national and international context (Essential)
  • Excellent organisational skills (Essential)

Program Coordinator Young Environmentalist Awards

The Role

As Young Environmentalist Awards Programme Coordinator, you will coordinate and deliver the Young Environmentalist Awards (YEA), ECO-UNESCO’s flagship programme. The Young Environmentalist Awards is Ireland’s leading environmental awards programme for young people recognising and rewarding their work in environmental protection through local environmental action projects. Involving over 4,000 participants annually, the Awards engage young people through schools, youth groups and communities across Ireland, supporting them to take action on environmental issues and celebrating their passion and creativity. This is a position of responsibility within the organisation, and applicants should be able to demonstrate the ability to take on such responsibility.

Key responsibilities:

Running all phases of the Young Environmentalist Awards (YEA) programme, Ireland’s all island environmental awards
programme for 10–18-year-olds including;

  • Driving increased numbers of projects and participants taking part in the programme from secondary schools, youth groups, Youthreach Centres, and community groups on a regional (all-Ireland) basis and per category basis through
    promotion, recruitment and registration.
  • Supporting, training and upskilling YEA Mentors and YEA Groups in the use and implementation of the ‘6-Steps to
    Success’ framework and Handbook for developing their local environmental action projects.
  • Organising the judging process, including ECO-Dens across the island of Ireland.
  • Supporting the development and progression of Young Environmentalist Awards groups in the establishment of ECOUNESCO clubs and supporting these Clubs as part of the national network of ECO-UNESCO Clubs.
  • Monitoring and Evaluating the programme and its impact on an ongoing basis and carrying out an end of year
    evaluation and report.
  • Running specific funded YEA related programmes in conjunction with Local Authorities and other bodies.
  • Liaising with and supporting ECO-UNESCO’s other Youth programmes to participate in the YEA programme.
  • In conjunction with the National Director and Operations & Development Manager, research and establish new
    elements for the Young Environmentalist Awards programme as identified.
  • Rolling out on YEA Roadshow, groups visits and Information Days.

 

Fundraising, Grant Writing & Reporting:

  • Writing funding grants & proposals for key stakeholders, including subsequent reporting on an annual basis.
  • Support in identifying funding and sponsorship opportunities for the Young Environmentalist Awards and related
    programmes.
  • Developing and implementing a fundraising and sponsorship strategy in conjunction with the Head of Fundraising
    and the National Director.
 

Promotion of YEA and ECO-UNESCO: 

  • Liaising with schools, youth groups, ETB’s, media partners and others.
  • Promoting ECO-UNESCO through talks, workshops, seminars and presentations.
  • Reporting on a regular basis to the National Director, Board of Directors and Government departments.
 

Other: 

  • Assisting delivery of ECO-UNESCO’s other programmes as needed.
  • Providing regular reports to Management.
  • Undertaking any other such relevant duties as directed.
  • Representing ECO-UNESCO on relevant ESD and DE bodies if required.
  • Managing the programme’s administration, including associated IT systems and Salesforce.

Person Specification.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A qualification in education or youth work (Desirable)
 

Experience:

  • At least 2 years work experience in direct work with young people (10-18); youth work, education and/or
    environmental education/sustainable development and /or in a similar youth awards scheme/programme
    (Essential)
  • Working knowledge of the Irish secondary schools system and the youth work sector. (Essential)
  • A proven track record in the management and delivery of large scale projects. (Essential)
  • Budgetary management experience from initial planning through to end of project reporting. (Essential)
  • A track record in securing and reporting on funding. (Essential)
 

Knowledge and skills:

  • Demonstrable organisation skills, having managed multiple priorities and adherence to deadlines.
