ECO-UNESCO is delighted to announce the exhibition of a unique and wonderful hyperbolic crochet representation of a coral reef where maths, handicraft, marine, environment, art and community combine in an explosion of colour, shape and crocheted form at The Greenhouse, Dublin 2.
THE IRISH REEF, is a Satellite of the worldwide Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project created by Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute For Figuring in Los Angeles as a response to the threat that global warming poses to the Great Barrier Reef. The Irish Reef was brought into being under the auspices of the Science Gallery, an initiative of Trinity College Dublin, as part of the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef: A Woolly Wonder exhibition held in 2010.
As well as providing a stunning visual exhibition, the purpose behind exhibiting the International Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef and its satellite reefs is to highlight the effect that changing environmental conditions are having on the world’s precious coral reefs and oceans. Workshops on hyperbolic geometry, the environment, the Irish Porcupine Bank Reef and Hyperbolic Crochet will be held during the exhibition.
The Irish Reef will be on display at The Greenhouse, St Andrews Street, Dublin 2, from July 19th to September 23rd, 2011. The exhibition is open on weekdays during normal opening hours from 9.30 am to 5.00 pm.
