Board of Directors 

ECO-UNESCO is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors called the National Council. The National Council is made up of representatives or members of ECO-UNESCO. The Board of Directors 2016 is made up of Jamie Cudden (Chairperson) Tom McGovern (Treasurer), Liz Carroll, Anne Marie Kilshaw, Chris Nolan & Marie Collins. The Board of Directors are elected each year at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, is the Patron of ECO-UNESCO. We are delighted to have the support of President Higgins as we continue with our environmental education and youth work. 

 

Staff

ECO-UNESCO is run by a team of 15+ people. This is a mix of full-time and part-time staff, TUS workers, Jobbridge and Work Placement Programme employees and internships.

Elaine Nevin - (National Director/CEO)

Elaine Nevin is the National Director (Chief Executive Officer) of ECO-UNESCO since 2002. Elaine holds a BA in Geography and Political Science and an MA and a Higher Diploma in Education. She has worked in the field of environmental education since 1995 and believes that empowering, educating and engaging young people is an essential component to achieving sustainable development.

Elaine has headed up a range of projects in ECO-UNESCO including the Young Environmentalist Awards programme; Youth for Sustainable Development peer education, the development of ECO-UNESCO as a QQI accredited centre, and the development of Green Youth Employability programmes. She led the consultation on the National Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development in the Republic of Ireland in 2008 which fed into the National Strategy on ESD in 2014. She is currently heading up ECO-UNESCO's involvement in the UNESCO Global Action Programme on the implementation of ESD and is a member of the key partner network for the implementation of UNESCO's GAP under the key priority area 4 - 'Mobilising and Empowering young people'.

Elaine sits on and has sat on a range of bodies including the Irish Environmental Network, National Youth Council of Ireland (past Vice-President; current Chair of the NYCI Specialist Organisation Network), and is the Chairperson of the Advisory Group on the National Dialogue on Climate Change. She was a Ministerial Appointee to the Environmental Protection Agency in 2011 and was reappointed to the EPA Advisory Committee in 2016; she is a member of the Advisory Committee for the National Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development in the Department of Education and Skills, and sits on the Steering Committee of the Regional Centre of Expertise in ESD Dublin.

Dunchadh Kinane - Environmental Youth Officer (Clubs, ECO Youth Choices)

Dunchadh has seven years experience in environmental youth work. He has a Masters in Equality Studies, a degree in Anthropology and a certificate in Group Work and facilitation.

Susie Spratt - Education and Youth Officer

Susie has an MA International Relations from UCD where she carried out primary research into education in India in conjunction with teams of TY students. Previously, she worked as a secondary level school teacher and enjoys making education meaningful and fun for young people. In her spare time she stages large-scale dramatic productions for students of all ages.

Ji Hyun Kim - Young Environmentalist Awards Programme Coordinator

Ji has a MA in International Relations and Development. During her time at UNESCO Bangkok (Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education) she worked on the Education for All programme and liaised with the UN Girls' Education Initiative (UNGEI) Newtwork. At ECO-UNESCO, Ji primarily works on organising and running the Young Environmentalist Awards programme.

Lisa Wilson - Fundraising and Communications Officer

Lisa has over five year's experience in fundraising, communications and event management in the not for profit sector. Lisa has a BSC (Hons) Management and a MSc International Development: Environment & Development from the University of Manchester. Lisa has a passion for nature, and can frequetly be spotted on horseback around Phoenix Park.

David Brooks - ECO-Choices Project Coordinator

Dave has a MSc Environmental Psychology from the University of Surrey. He has worked with young people for a number of years and has experience of environmental communications and campaigning. Dave is delighted to be working where his two passions reside, protecting the environment and empowering young people. Dave is a keen surfer and will go considerably out of his way to see a rare bird.

Niall Barrett - Youth for Sustainable Development Coordinator

Niall has a BSc in Environmental Management and completed an Internship at ECO-UNESCO whilst completing his studies. Following his completion of a MSc Local Development, Niall returned to ECO-UNESCO as the Youth for Sustainable Development Coordinator. He has over 10 year's experience of working with young people through Scouting Ireland, and it was through this experience he discovered his affinity for the natural environment.

Triona Reid - Youth Employability Programme Officer

Triona holds a BA in Public and Social Policy from NUI Galway and an MA in Social Work from Trintity College. Triona also holds qualifications in Motivational Interviewing and a QQI Level 5 qualification in Sustainable Development. Triona has a strong interest in environmental issues having spent a year living in a Sustainable Community in Australia and gaining first hand experience in a number of environmental issues including permaculture, renewable energy, and sustainable development.
